That’s right, 82% of America's access control systems are using 125kHz card technology (commonly called Prox cards). This technology used to be the industry standard, ensuring widespread adoption and stayed a top product in security for many years.
The problem is that with technology advancements, credentials and security technology that use Prox are now easily comprised. Making once highly secure premises not so secure in the modern-day.
Don’t worry, it's not all doom and gloom for your security. It just means it might be time to invest in some security upgrades. There are simple ways to upgrade and re-secure facilities using the newer 13.56MHz - specifically MIFARE DESFire technology. This can either be done slowly or all at once.
Doing this gradually over a period of time is called migration and is where a company can replace critical readers first with less critical readers being changed later. A migration reader (such as the BQT BT951 or BT953) will read the existing Prox card base as well as the new MIFARE DESFire cards that can be issued.
Migration is a cost-effective way to migrate your security away from a compromised system. As and when all the readers on site are replaced with a BT951 or BT953, the Prox element can be disabled, leaving only the secure MIFARE DESFire credentials to gain access. This can be as slow or quick as you would like. However, it is the first step to ensuring your facility isn’t in the 82%!
